Periodontics, is the branch of dentistry concerning supporting structures of teeth, and diseases that affect them. The supporting structure includes the gingiva (gums), periodontal attachment and the supporting bone.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology website: "A Periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases, and the placement and maintenance of dental implants."

A Periodontist  also specializes in beautifying your smile by sculpting your gums through various cosmetic gum surgical procedures.
